During 24-29 September 2017, BCRC China participated in the First Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on Mercury which was held in Geneva, Switzerland. Over 1000 representatives from 163 governments, IGOs, and NGOs attended the conference. The topics of the conference included rules of procedure, financial mechanisms, technical matters, work arrangements and budget, etc. Moreover, a High-Level Segment of which the theme was “make mercury history” was hosted by the Government of Switzerland during the conference, and totally over 80 ministerial leaders of various countries participated the meeting.
During the conference, BCRC China signed memorandum of understanding with Basel Convention Coordinating Centre, Stockholm Convention Regional Centre, for Capacity Building and Technology Transfer for Latin America and the Caribbean (BCCC-SCRC-Uruguay). The two sides have reached a mutual understanding to cooperate in activities in the field of the environmental sound management of waste and chemicals, and cooperative efforts will be associated with, but not limited to:
1) collaborate on training, conferences, workshops;
2) jointly develop and apply for bilateral, regional and multinational projects in relevant areas；
3) invite staff to attend meetings and carry out technical internships, etc.
The signing ceremony of the MOU was chaired by Rolph Payet, the executive secretary of the Secretariat of the three conventions. Eneida De León, minister of Uruguay Housing, Land Planning and Environment Department, and Zhong Bin, deputy director of the Soil Environment Management Division, Ministry of Environmental Protection, attended the signing ceremony and delivered speeches.
