Assessing the feasibility of eliminating brominated diphenyl ethers (BDEs) from the recycling and waste stream and substitution of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid and its related chemicals (PFOS) in developing countries

The project is funded by UNEP/BRS Secretariat, designed to last for 8 months from July 2013 to February 2014. The overall objective of the project is to support parties from developing countries in eliminating BDEs in articles and the production and use PFOS by providing information on approaches that can be implemented to achieve these aims.

Through feasibility study on the establishment of control schemes and application of screening and separation techniques to separate materials containing BDEs from the recycling and waste streams and on the substitution of the use of PFOS in the main industrial sectors, the project will identify alternative management approaches that could be applied when screening and separation techniques are not readily applicable, and assess the feasibility of substituting the use of PFOS in the major applications that still use it.
