SCRCAP/BCRC China organized the side event “Experiences in environmentally sound management of e-waste in Africa and Asia-Pacific” on 20 October 2011 during the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 10) to the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movement of Hazardous Waste and their Disposal, jointly with the Government of Japan, the Basel Convention Regional Coordinating Centre for the African Region in Nigeria (BCCC-Nigeria), and the Secretariat of Basel Convention (SBC). SBC and BCRC China separately gave the welcome address, BCRC China mainly introduced the activities on e-waste in recent years with focus on concept and practice (pilot project in TES-AMM Corporation (China) Limited in Suzhou) of the Best Available Techniques and Best Environmental Practices (BAT/BEP) on e-waste. About 150 participants of COP 10 attended this side event and had a warm discussion on e-waste.
COP 10 to Basel Convection was held on 17-21 October 2011 in Cartagena, Colombia, under the theme of “Prevention, minimization and recovery of wastes”. About 400 participants from 116 parties, 6 intergovernments and other organizations and observers attended this meeting. The key issues, such as new strategic framework, Basel Convention Coordinating/Regional Centres, and technical guidelines, were discussed and finally 25 decisions were passed. Prof. Jinhui Li, executive secretary of SCRCAP/BCRC China and other 3 program officers attended COP 10, and showcased its history, resources and activities through the poster exhibition.
