On 16th-17th December 2010, “Capacity-building and Awareness-raising Workshop on Environmental Sound Management (ESM) of Asbestos Waste in Asia and the Pacific” was held in Beijing successfully. This workshop was organized by Basel Convention Coordinating Center for Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China). Delegates from SBC, BCRC SEA, BCRC Tehran, UNEP, ILO, WHO, delegates from China, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines who are in charge of Basel Convention implementation, Chinese and Japan experts of asbestos waste management, delegates from local asbestos wastes treatment company and environmental protection agency, totally 26 delegates, participated in this workshop. Mr Du Kexiong from Office of Solid Waste Management, Department of Pollution Prevention and Control, MEP China, Dadan Wardhana from SBC, and professor Li Jinhui from College of Environmental Science and Engineering Tsinghua University, executive secretary of BCRC China attended the opening ceremony and made speeches. In the workshop, BCRC China introduced the outcomes and development of the ongoing asbestos waste project, delegates from four countries, international asbestos waste management experts stated the status and experience of own country’s asbestos waste management and discussed the situation of asbestos waste treatment, management and the problems existing in Asia and the Pacific. The workshop can initiate the environmental sound management of asbestos waste and awareness-raising and capacity-building in Asia and the Pacific.
