Meetings of the Conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions (BC COP-12, RC COP-7, SC COP-7) were held from 4 to 15 May 2015, in Geneva, Switzerland, and were attended by more than 1200 participants from 171 parties, 10 international organizations and 105 non-governmental organizations, etc.
Prof. Hao Jiming, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Li Jihui and other 10 representatives attended this meeting on behalf of Basel Convention Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific/Stockholm Convention Regional Centre for Capacity-building and the Transfer of Technology in Asia and the Pacific (BCRC China/SCRCAP). As members of the Chinese delegation, Prof. Yu Gang of the School of Environment (SOE), Tsinghua University and Ms. Zheng Lixia, Ms. Chen Yuan, Ms. Zhao Nana, Ms. Ren Junshu of BCRC China participated the Technical Negotiation of the Basel and Stockholm Conventions. Funded by BCRC China, 6 GEP (Global Environment Program) undergraduate students of SOE also joined the meeting as observers and took part in the meeting progress under the guidance of international advisory experts.
During the meetings, for the first time, all the 14 Basel Convention Regional Centres and 16 Stockholm Convention Regional Centres were comprehensively assessed on their work performance between the year 2013 and 2014. BCRC China SCRCAP both got the full marks, 100 scores. BCRC China/SCRCAP is the only center with the functions of both conventions that got this highest score among all the centres. These precious achievements of BCRC China/SCRCAP were referred many times by EU and others during the negotiations on the item of regional centres.
On the Special Fair “From science to action” organized by the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions from 7 to 9 May 2015 during the meetings, Prof. Li Jinhui, Executive Director of BCRC China, was invited to give a report entitled “From science to action - Promoting the Environmental Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste in Asia and the Pacific Region”. By the report, Prof. Li shared lots of information and experience of BCRC China on the practice of promoting the environmental sound management of chemicals and waste.
During the meetings, representatives of BCRC China talked in details with governments of funding countries, international organizations, Global Environment Facility (GEF), etc., promoted the activities of BCRC China, and discussed on the following potential cooperation fields. Moreover, representatives of BCRC China joined the Side Events of Network for Optimizing Regulatory Compliance on Illegal Traffic (ENFORCE), Partnership for Action on Computing Equipment (PACE), PCBs Elimination Network (PEN) and Environmental Sound Management Framework (ESM), and shared lots of information and experience.
